The Byre
We warmly welcome you to this beautiful corner of England and in order
to help you enjoy it as much as possible we have completed a list of
places to visit, with opening days and times. As you can see, this area
is full of interests of all sorts and to suit all tastes.
Rye is also covered by a Guidebook and 'Town Walk' in folder. There are
many miles of beautiful beaches to walk along, especially at Camber and
Winchelsea.
Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is only 1-½ miles - with free
parking but this may change, Hides for viewing many species of
birds trails, and walking
across unspoilt country.
Another interesting day out is a trip to France, either Boulogne or
Calais from Folkestone or Dover by ferry or travel in style on the
Eurostar!! Passenger trains from Ashford only take 2 hours to arrive in
Paris so you can lunch on the Champs à Elysées!
Alternatively you can take your car on the Eurotunnel from Folkestone
to Calais in only 35 minutes plus there is a shuttle every 20 minutes!!

Rye
Heritage Centre housing a scale model
of the town based on a 1700s
map - a complete sound and light experience bringing the story of RYE
alive. Follow in the footsteps of smugglers - life and times of a
bygone age.

Museum exhibits at
two
sites, the newly restored
building in East Street housing the town’s original
fire engine (or hand drawn pump, leather buckets and short ladder as it
should be known) local pottery and ironwork plus much more about local
life. And the medieval building THE
YPRES TOWER a
former dwelling,
prison and mortuary offers the best views of the vast harbour that once
was.
St. Mary's Church guardian of the
town
since the 12th century. Large
and interesting with many unusual features, not least the clock one the
old church time pieces in the country with "Quarter Boys" and long
pendulum.
Rye Art Gallery: - Has a changing programme of exhibition featuring
artist living and working in the area. Also a permanent collection as
well as many traveling exhibitions .

The Rye Heritage Centre provides an ideal introduction to the town
bringing together the Story of Rye set within the Rye Town Model, Audio
Walking Tours of Rye including the new Ghost Walks, the Rye Tourist
Information Centre in the restored Old Sail Loft building. The Rye
Tourist Information Centre offers the latest information on
accommodation, places to visit and things to do in and around this
historic town as well as a shop full of interesting gifts.

Battle
Abbey Battle Abbey
was built by William the Conqueror to commemorate his victory over
Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. You can relive the battle
with the aid of a free audio guide of the battlefield. Enjoy a stroll
across the now peaceful battlefield, picnic in lovely surroundings or
enjoy a light lunch in a nearby tearoom. Visit the great gatehouse with
its exhibition of monastic life at the abbey. Enjoy the audio visual
interpretation of the battle, the 1066 exhibition, the children's

to visitors who come to appreciate the beauty and tranquillity of this

18th century by ‘Capability’ Brown and further developed in the early
years of the 20th century by its owner, Arthur G. Soames. The original

Winchelsea
Town The thirteenth century was a period of coastal erosion and the
shingle spit on which the town stood was steadily eaten away, Old
Winchelsea's first petition to the King for help was made in 1236 but
nothing was done until, a commission was sent down in 1282 to examine
the situation. The Commissioners, who included the King's Treasurer and
the Mayor of London, reported that Winchelsea was indeed in a parlous
state, a large part being already destroyed and the rest in imminent
danger. They agreed that the well being of the town was of great value
to the realm and it should be rebuilt on a safer site. top
