Battle 1066 and all that!
|
|
| The
town of Battle was the scene of the conflict which
shaped the course of English history in 1066 - The Battle of Hastings. Battle Abbey tells the story of the invasion
and the days that followed, it was founded by William the Conqueror on
the
field where he defeated Harold. On
Caldbec Hill where, at the top and to the left, there is a windmill on
the site
where Harold is said to have assembled his army before the Battle of
Hastings. In front of the Abbey Gatehouse
is the
‘Abbey Green’ with its cobbled bullring which remains as a relic of the
‘sport’
of bull baiting. Battle High Street is
full of 17th and 18th century buildings including
the
Almonry. A house has been on this site
since 1090 and the present building was built after the years of
decline
following the Black Death. The once
bustling cattle market behind the Almonry is now the Market Square. |
